I. Pharmacopeia Records and Origin
1. Names and Aliases
   - Scientifically named "Yunshi Borer", is also known as "Huangliao Wolf Worm" or "Inverted Thorn Worm." It has been used since 741 BCE (the 29th year of the Tang Dynasty's Kaiyuan era), with a history spanning over 2,700 years. Due to its rarity and remarkable efficacy, ancient people exchanged “one dou” of rice (approximately 12.5 pounds) for a single larva, hence its name.
   - Origin: The larva of the longhorn beetle *Apriona swainsoni* parasitic in the stems or roots of the leguminous plant *Caesalpinia decapetala*.

2. Harvesting and Processing
   - Collected in summer and autumn by splitting infested *Caesalpinia* trees. Live larvae are milky-white and cylindrical, while dried specimens turn brown, measuring 4.5–8 cm in length.
   - Traditional methods include capturing live larvae, roasting, drying, and grinding into powder for medicinal use.

3. Pharmacopeia Status
   - Doumichong contains antimicrobial proteins, 8 essential amino acids, and trace elements (e.g., zinc, iron). When roasted, it emits a rich aroma and pleasant taste. Its bioactive proteins exhibit unique health benefits.
   - Documented in classical texts such as 《Compendium of Materia Medica》 (Bencao Gangmu), 《Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica》 (Shennong Bencao Jing), 《Zhejiang Traditional Chinese Medicine》, 《Flora of Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang》, 《Jiangxi Herbal Manual》, 《Chinese Materia Medica》 (Zhonghua Bencao), and 《Wenling County Medicinal Resources Catalog》.

II. Core Efficacy and Effects
1. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Benefits
   - Resolves Phlegm and Relieves Cough: Targets the lung meridian, alleviates sticky phlegm and poor measles eruption.
   - Reduces Food Stagnation: Targets the spleen meridian, improves indigestion, pediatric malnutrition (ganji), and nutrient deficiencies.
   - Disperses Cold and Relieves Pain: Warm and pungent properties address bone/joint pain and wind-cold (common cold).

2. Modern Pharmacological Actions
   - Boosts Immunity: Rich in antimicrobial proteins, polysaccharides, essential amino acids, and trace elements (zinc, iron) that activate immune cells, enhancing disease resistance. Significantly regulates immune dysfunction, serving as a rare biopharmaceutical resource against pathogens, viruses, and tumors.
   - Anti-Pathogen and Anti-Tumor Activity:
     - Antimicrobial proteins and chitin combat bacteria and viruses, aiding hepatitis and lung inflammation.
     - Animal studies show tumor suppression via cancer cell apoptosis or immune modulation.
   - Liver Protection and Detoxification**: Promotes hepatocyte repair, mitigates chemical liver damage, and aids in treating cirrhosis and fatty liver.
   - Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory: Contains glutathione and selenium to neutralize free radicals, slow aging, and alleviate chronic inflammation.

3. Additional Benefits
   - Digestive Health: Dietary fiber enhances bowel motility, preventing constipation.
   - Skin and Beauty: Antioxidants delay skin aging and regulate endocrine function.
   - Wound Healing: Collagen and amino acids accelerate tissue repair.

III. Clinical Applications and Usage Guidelines
1. Target Populations
   - Immunocompromised individuals, postoperative recovery patients, chronic bronchitis/asthma sufferers.
   - Children with developmental delays, anorexia, indigestion, or poor measles eruption.

2. Classic Formulations
   - Pediatric Malnutrition (Ganji): Mix roasted powder into porridge or scrambled eggs.
   - Bone/Joint Pain: Take powder with sweet rice wine.
   - Poor Measles Eruption: Crush and steep in water for oral use.

3. Contraindications and Precautions
   - Contraindications: Use cautiously in individuals with diarrhea or loose stools; avoid during pregnancy or if allergic.
   - Side Effects: Overdose may cause bloating or diarrhea.
